How do Walking Sessions work?

During walking sessions, you'll have therapy conversations over the phone or in person while walking outdoors. You can book sessions, sometimes with a GP referral, and choose a comfortable location. On the day, wear suitable clothing and bring water. The session lasts for a set time, focusing on your goals and well-being, with safety measures in place for outdoor sessions.

Are there different types of sessions available (e.g., initial consultation, follow-up sessions)?

Yes, there are different types of sessions available, including initial consultations and follow-up sessions. The initial consultation is typically the first session where we discuss your needs, goals, and how the sessions will work. Follow-up sessions are scheduled afterward to continue our discussions and work towards your goals

Do I need a referral from my GP to participate in Walking Sessions?

You typically don't need a referral from your GP to participate in Walking Sessions. However, obtaining a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP can give you access to up to 10 sessions with Medicare rebates, making therapy more affordable and accessible.

How does the referral process work, if required?

If a referral is required, the process typically involves discussing your mental health needs with your GP. They may then assess your situation and provide a referral for a Psychologist which you can choose yourself. This referral and Mental Health Care Plan can will allow you to access Medicare rebates of $93.35 for up to 10 of your sessions via phone and Medicare rebates of $117.25 for up to 10 of your sessions in person.

Where will the Walking Sessions take place?

The Walking Sessions take place outdoors, typically in a location of your choice or a recommended area that is comfortable and conducive to therapy discussions if done via phone.

Walking Sessions conducted in person start from the Deck Cafe at the back of the Lagoon Restaurant at North Wollongong. 

 

We highly recommend going for a walk in the area that you have in mind, just ensure you are comfortable on the day.

What should I wear or bring for the session?

For the session, wear comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for walking outdoors. It's also a good idea to bring a water bottle and any items you may need for your comfort during the session.

How long does a typical walking session last?

A typical walking session lasts for a set duration, usually around 50 minutes to an hour. This allows for a focused and productive therapy discussion while enjoying the benefits of walking outdoors.

What happens during the session?

During a Walking Session, you'll engage in therapy conversations over the phone or in person while walking outdoors. The session focuses on your goals and well-being, covering various topics relevant to your mental health and personal growth. Your pychologist will guide the discussion, providing support, insights, and strategies to help you navigate challenges and work towards positive changes in your life.

What safety measures are in place during outdoor sessions ?

During outdoor sessions, safety measures are in place to ensure a comfortable and secure experience. If it rains or if clients prefer, they have the option to stay in the comfort of their home or for in person session we will inform you of alternate arrangements.

 

Emergency contact information is also available in case of any unforeseen circumstances during the session. Additionally, client information is stored securely, and details about privacy and data security will be discussed in the first session.

Can I use face-to-face telehealth instead of a phone session for walking therapy?

Yes, you can use face-to-face telehealth for walking therapy sessions if that option is available and preferable for you. Face-to-face telehealth allows for video calls where you can see and interact with your psychologist while still benefiting from the outdoor setting of walking therapy.
